One of my favorite things about being an Idaho wedding photographer is that every couple has unique rings! Each ring is so unique and special. You might be wondering what the symbolism of the wedding ring is? Their beauty goes beyond aesthetic and in their symbols. Everything from their shape to which hand we wear our rings are deeply rooted with meaning, history, culture, and tradition.
Wedding rings have been around since ancient Egyptian times. Rings are shaped as circles to symbolize completeness, commitment, and love. As a circle has no end, rings symbolize an eternal love. Wedding Rings used to be made from plants, leather, or bones. Now, people often use metal. While gold is most traditional, people also wear platinum as it doesn’t irritate those with sensitive skin.
Which hand you wear your wedding ring on depends on your country, culture, and tradition. In the United States, people often wear their wedding ring on the fourth finger of the left hand. This comes from the ancient roman belief that the vein in the fourth finger on the left hand led to the heart. They called this vein “vena amoris” meaning vein of love. In Bulgaria, Denmark, Greece, India, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, and Spain the wedding ring is worn on the right hand.
Diamonds are strong and endure through time. Because of this, they symbolize eternity and that is the reason they are on traditional wedding rings. With current trends, other gemstones are becoming popular. Sapphire and ruby are very durable and brilliant. Sapphire can come in all different colors like pink, teal, purple, and blue.
While the material and gemstone have changed throughout the ages, its meaning has stayed consistent. Wedding rings mean enduring commitment, eternal love, and completeness. Wedding rings can be personalized for you and your spouse and it will retain that beautiful promise on that special day. I wanted something unique, vintage, and art deco! If you have seen my ring you know that my husband did an AMAZING job! What do you love about your ring/ what do you want in a wedding ring?
