Here is how to write your wedding vow for that sweet and special day. Remember, your wedding vow is your promise to your special person and to your marriage, so personalize it!
Start by making a list. This is a great way to gather your thoughts and explore what you could say during your wedding vow. REMEMBER: This is just a pre-writing activity so just write whatever comes to your mind.
Once you have a list, mark down the ones most meaningful to you and ones that you think will be meaningful to your spouse-to-be. Cross off any inside jokes or things you wouldn’t feel comfortable saying in front of your family and friends at the wedding.
After you have your list narrowed down to a few options, decide on what you wish to say. You can talk about unique facts, a story or two, and why you love your spouse-to-be. Just remember to pace your story in a way that suits your storytelling style, and to watch the time.
Make your promises personal. They can even have a touch of humor! The important thing is to make promises that come from your heart. Avoid using words like always and never. Also, address the possibility of rough times, and how you will ride those rough waves. This is super important as the future is uncertain. Also, say I love you at the end!
After writing, take a break, and then return to edit it. After writing a lot, it’s good to take a breath before diving back in. Start your editing by timing yourself as you read outloud. This will give you an idea of how long your wedding vow is, and how it flows. Edit based on your observations, and if you want, get help from someone you trust.
I hope these tips help you as you prepare your wedding vow. Remember your wedding vow should be personal to you and your spouse-to-be. Look at your relationship and what you hope for the future as you write your wedding vow!
